Work That Satisfies - West Jordan
Ecclesiastes 2:17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
Ecclesiastes 3:13,22 That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God... So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot.
Big Question: What keeps us from finding satisfaction in our work?
Work becomes DESTRUCTIVE when the value of work DEVIATES from the DESIGN of work.
Design Deviator #1: When work becomes about my NAME and my FAME
Genesis 11:1-4 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
Design Deviator #2: When work becomes about my THINGS and my DREAMS.
Ecclesiastes 4:4,8 And I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from man's envy of his neighbor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind… 8 There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. “For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless— a miserable business!
Now what I want you to get clear is that Pride is essentially competitive – is competitive by its very nature… Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man. We say people are proud of being rich, or clever, or good-looking but they are not. They are proud of being richer, or cleverer, or better-looking than others. -C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)
Design Aligner: Recognizing that WHO I work for is more in important that WHAT I work for.
Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
The more I DELIGHT in how Jesus has served me the more I will DELIGHT in serving others.
Because Jesus WORKED for my ETERNAL life, I can find REST in my TEMPORAL life.
Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
