The Good Place
What Makes Heaven Better Than Now? | Part 3: The Good Place | St. George
Series Thesis: Heaven is underwhelming when we lack UNDERSTANDING.
Philippians 1:21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
Question: If we really believe that heaven is the better place, why don’t we want to go to now?
Answer: I’m not really CONVINCED that heaven is the better place.
Question: Why is Heaven better than now?
Answer #1: Heaven is better because of what it HAS = God’s visible presence.
Revelation 21:1-3 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.
John 17:20-24 “…I pray… 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in usso that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity…24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
Answer #2: Heaven is better because of what it LACKS = the curse of sin and death.
Revelation 21:4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
“We can’t imagine unending happiness. Because that level of happiness is not possible here on the fallen earth, we assume it won’t be possible on the New earth…We must remove from our eyes the distorted lenses of the death and curse.” – Randy Alcorn
Answer #3: After God restores us (the resurrection), He will restore the EARTHand INHABIT it with us.
Revelation 21:1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away…
Bottom Line: Heaven is the EARTH that you know, but in way that you have never KNOWN.
