The Rethinking of a Murderer | Zealot Part 3 | Draper

Everything you THINK comes from the way someone else THOUGHT.

QUESTION: Whose thoughts are you thinking?

Today, even as belief in God fades across the West, the countries that were once collectively known as Christendom continue to bear the stamp of the two-millennia-old revolution that Christianity represents. It is the principal reason why, by and large, most of us who live in post-Christian societies still take for granted that it is nobler to suffer than to inflict suffering. It is why we generally assume that every human life is of equal value. In my morals and ethics, I have learned to accept that I am not Greek or
Roman at all, but thoroughly and proudly Christian. –Tom Holland

Philippians 2:5-11 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:[6] Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;[7] rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.[8] And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross![9] Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the
name that is above every name,[10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,[11] and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Following Jesus changes WHAT you believe and HOW and how you think.

● Control is telling people WHAT to think.
● Influence is teaching people HOW to think.

Acts 18:1-4 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them. Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.

● Control is SUPPRESSING people who disagree with you.

● Influence is SERVING people who disagree with you.

Acts 17:16-31 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there...Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you. “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one
man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or
stone—an image made by human design and skill. 30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

Romans 15:20-22 It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.[21] Rather, as it is written: “Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.”[22] This is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.

Do you invest in what you VALUE most or in what you WANT now?

Your impact zone is where your ABILITY and AVAILABILITY intersect.

Missions exist because worship doesn’t. –John Piper

BOTTOM LINE: I’ll change my approach to you if it changes your APPROACH to Jesus.

Questions for Parents & Students:

1. When do you feel the tug of war between what you want now vs. what you value most?

2. What's your impact zone?

Small Group Questions:

1. As an adult, who in your life has shaped your thinking most? Tell us about it.

2. What's more important, what you think or how you think? Explain.

3. Read Acts 17:16-31 and Acts 18:1-4. What differences do you see in Paul's approach in these two cities?

4. When if comes to the Gospel, how do you invest in what you value most over what you want now?

5. Read the bottom line again. Where do you see your ability and your availability intersecting? What are you or what will you do about it?
