Let There Be Light

Dec 09, 2018 | Paul Robie

The Light Of Hope | Let There Be Light Part 2 | Draper

Did You Know? John is the only one that didn’t talk about the WHAT of Christmas, only the WHY.

Note: John’s PAIN shaped his PERSPECTIVE.

Note: Jesus PREDICTED these things..

Luke 21:6 “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Luke 23:27-31 And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him. 28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

John 20:30-31 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Note: Jesus was and is the hope of the WORLD, not just the JEWS.

Big Idea: There is no type of DARKNESS that can extinguish this LIGHT, and that brings us HOPE.

Definition: Hope is not POSITIVE thinking it is TRUST placing.

The two building blocks of hope are: 1. DESIRE and 2. EXPECTATION

Advent Moment: The metaphor of light means HOPE for the SUFFERING.

Discussion Questions

1. What is the most horrific suffering you have ever witnessed / experienced? Describe how you felt at the time. What did you learn about life from that experience?

2. Read Matthew 24:2 & Luke 21:6 & 23:27-31 and talk about the suffering associated with the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70.

3. Why is it significant that John, of all people, would continue to insist that LIFE is found in Christ? (see John 20:30-31)

4. Read John 1:1-5 and talk about why LIGHT and DARKNESS are appropriate metaphors in the context of Christmas? What is it about Christmas that lies to us about finding the fulfillment of your deepest desires in this world?

5. What proof from your life can you give to support the statement: there was and is nothing in this world that can extinguish the LIGHT of CHRIST.
