Road Trip Testing | Road Trip Part 3 | St George
Series Thesis: Adventure and adversity develop UNITY.
Today’s Observation: The wilderness Road Trip was used by God to get the Israelites’ ATTENTION and to build their CHARACTER.
Deuteronomy 8:2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
Test #1: God tested their PATIENCE.
Exodus 13:17-18 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.
Test #2: God tested their DEFAULT reaction to tough circumstances.
Exodus 16:2-3 …the whole community of Israel complained about Moses and Aaron. 3 “If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned. “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.”
Key Thought: When we choose to GRUMBLE instead of being GRATEFUL, we fail to see the possibilities as to what God might do through for us and through us.
Test #3: God tested them to see if they would trust Him to PROVIDE for them.
Deuteronomy 8:3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Exodus 16:4 …the Lord said to Moses, “Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for you. Each day the people can go out and pick up as much food as they need for that day. I will test them in this to see whether or not they will follow my instructions. NLT
Question: How did this help the Israelites understand what was in their own hearts?
Answer: Learning to trust God for His daily provision of food reinforced the fact that they were not in CONTROL.
Matthew 6:9-11 “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.11 Give us today our daily bread.”
Bottom Line: The testing is not about PASSING; it’s about DISCOVERING what is inside of you.
