Road Trip

Jun 23, 2019 | Tom Mertz

Road Trip Faith | Road Trip Part 1 | St. George

Series Thesis: Road trips develop relational TRUST.

Genesis 15:13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there.

Every good Road Trip (story), including the story of Israel, has a similar plot line…

Someone you care about is THRIVING, then something BAD happens to them

Exodus 1:6-13 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, 7 but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them. 8 Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt. 9 “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous for us. 10 Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.” 11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly.

The Big Question: Why would God have Israel spend 400 years in captivity, free them, and then test them in the desert for 40 years? What was the purpose in all of this?

The Big Answer: God was PREPARING a people for Himself that could be used to point all people toward the one true, holy God.

God’s Wisdom: When we look back on Israel’s Road Trip, we can see that God had planned this Road Trip to accomplish several things...

He grew their NUMBER.

He grew their WEALTH.

He grew their TRUST in Him.

Deuteronomy 7:6-9 For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. 7 The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

Isaiah 49:6 “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”

Bottom Line: God will use adventure and adversity (A Road Trip) in order for us to BOND with Him.

Isaiah 49:6 “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”
