A Deep Series

Killing My Old Man | A Deep Series Part 2 | Draper

Colossians 3:5-11

QUESTION:  What is the story you tell yourself about yourself?

You are either ART or an ACCIDENT.

Psalms 8:4-5  What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.

SERIES THESIS:  When you BELIEVE the Gospel, you BECOME like the Gospel.

All of life is repentance. – Martin Luther

Colossians 3:5-11  Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self  (old man) with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

If you want to enjoy your NEW life, KILL the old one.

Colossians 3:5-11  Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

IDOLS:  anything or anyone other than God that we look to for ultimate SIGNIFICANCE, SECURITY and SATISFACTION

Galatians 2:20  I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The vigour and power, and comfort of our spiritual life depends on the mortification of the deeds of the flesh. – John Owen

There is a difference between REPENTING of sin and REGRETTING the consequence of sin.

Colossians 3:7-10  You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self  (old man) with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

REPENTANCE:  identifying and removing the IDOLS of the heart

OLD MAN = Your INSECURE self KILLING THE OLD MAN

1.   RUTHLESSLY engage your insecurity.

The promise of satisfaction in worldly loves is an enduring lie that moves the soul to unfaithfulness from its proper lover. – Augustine Of Hippo

2.   REFUSE  to sanitize your sin.

3.   RELENTLESSLY preach to yourself.

The purpose behind the suffering you are going through is to kick you into a new freedom from false definitions of who you are.  – Paul Zahl

IDENTITY:  I find delight in defining myself by _____________.

  • what Jesus did for me
  • what I do

BOTTOM LINE:  We don’t repent of sin to be LOVED.  We repent of sin because we are LOVED.

Romans 5:8  But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

GROUP DISCUSSION

1.  What’s a situation form the past week in which your performance did not measure up to the standard you set for yourself?  What thoughts and emotions did you have after that occasion?

2.  Read Colossians 3:5-11 as a group.  Do you find yourself more naturally REPENTING of sin or REGRETTING the consequences of sin?  Why do you think that is?

3.  Review the definition of IDOLS and the OLD MAN/SELF.  What idols and what insecurity continue to live in your life?

4.  Review the section of the message, Killing The Old Man.  Pick one or two examples from what was just shared and apply the three steps as an example.

5.  Read the quote below.  Then ask, “What is your response to this statement?”  I find delight in defining myself by what Jesus did for me, not what I do.

MEMORY VERSES  Pick one or try to memorize more than one.

2 Corinthians 5:16–17  So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Galatians 2:20  I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Ephesians 2:8–10   For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
