The Man Upstairs
Holy Hearts Part 2 | The Man Upstairs Part 7 | Lehi
Do you think God wants you HAPPY or HOLY?
If being UNHOLY leads to being UNHAPPY, then can being HOLY lead me to being HAPPY?
When you don’t understand holiness, CHRISTIANITY can cause you to lose heart.
John 17:13-18“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.
We all set APART our lives for something we think will SATISFY our lives.
John 17:19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.”
VERTICAL Holiness: to be set apart like and for God.
HORIZONTAL Holiness: to set aside myself for you.
John 17:20-26“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
Biblical sanctification simultaneously sets you are apart FROM the world and sets you apart FOR the world.
QUESTION: Who stands to win from your SANCTIFICATION?
YOU DO: Holiness and happiness go together.
THEY DO: Hurting people need holy people.
John 18:1 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
BOTTOM LINE: Our JOY in Jesus is what attracts the world to Jesus.
1. When you used to think about what it meant to be holy, what came to your mind?
2. What would you say to someone who wanted to know if God’s priority for us was our happiness not our holiness?
3. Read the C.S. Lewis quote. What unexpected “improvements” has God made in your life since taking up residence in your heart?
4. Read John 17:20-26. Explain what it means to be “set apart” (sanctified) for the world instead of from (as in, (out of”) the world?
5. Who is benefitting because of your sanctification? Because you are part of a “holy” culture?
