The 3 embers of Burnout center around FEAR
- Fear of MISSING OUT. Will I get this opportunity again?
- Fear of FALLING BEHIND. How do I measure up to others?
- Fear of NOT MATTERING. Do I actually matter?
Beating Burnout Method #1: The SABBATH.
Exodus 16:22-23 On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much—two omers for each person—and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses.  He said to them, “This is what the Lord commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord.’”
Beating Burnout Method #2: The law of GLEANING.
Deuteronomy 24:18-19;22 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this.  When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands...  Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this.
Matthew 6:25-27 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Bottom Line: When there is no margin between our pace and our limits it isn’t our PROGRESS that’s at stake, it’s our PEACE.
1. As you observe your own life or the lives of those around you, when
people operate very close to their limits, how does this affect them physically, emotionally, mentally, and relationally?
2. Where do you feel you need some breathing room? In what areas are you living dangerously close to your limits, and how is this affecting you? What are the forces at work in your life that tend to push you toward these limits? To what degree is fear involved in this?
3. We said that the three embers of burnout center around FEAR. Reread those and pick out the one that you’re the most afraid of. How does this fear contribute to you not having enough breathing room in your time, schedule, or relationships?
4. In Exodus 16:22-34, look at how Moses is instructing the people on God’s behalf on the Sabbath. What does this reveal about God’s care for humanity and his understanding of humanity? Jesus reminds us (in Mark 2:23-27) that God gave the Sabbath as a benefit to mankind. Do you use or think of the Sabbath as a benefit, or just another religious rule to follow? How do you think God wants us to use it?
5. Read Deuteronomy 24: 18–22. What does this provision reveal about God’s character? What practical benefit would this have provided? How does the principle here relate to the concept of finding breathing room in our lives today?
