OBSERVATION: If you fear the REJECTION of others you’ll conform to the
EXPECTATION others. OBSERVATION: If you fear the REJECTION of others you’ll conform to the EXPECTATION others.
FALSE BELIEF: I must do the right THINGS to be approved by the right PEOPLE to feel good about myself.
Galatians 1:6-10 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse! Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
A CONSEQUENCE OF THIS FALSE BELIEF: “I NEED YOU.”
>The fear of rejection
>People pleasing at any cost
>Withdrawal from others to avoid disapproval
>Anger, Resentment, Hostility
>Being Easily Manipulated
>Repeating Negative Messages
>Hypersensitivity to the Opinions of Others
GOSPEL SOLUTION: RECONCILIATION.
Reconciliation means that although at one time I was hostile and alienated from God, I now have been forgiven and brought into an intimate relationship with God. Consequently, I am totally accepted by God. –Robert S. McGee
A CONSEQUENCE OF THE GOSPEL: “I LOVE YOU.”
Colossians 3:12-14 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
BIG IDEA: Everything we do for others is based on what he HAS DONE for us and IS DOING in us.
· Compassion: deeply FEEL for people in need.
· Kindness: readiness to do GOOD for others.
· Humility: placing your life BELOW others.
· Gentleness: helping people in such a way that they don’t feel CONDEMNED.
· Patience: choosing to go at another person’s SPEED.
The activity of these people, in dealing with any matter that affects their community, is something extraordinary; they spare no trouble, no expense…You see, these misguided creatures start with the general conviction that they are immortal for all time, which explains the contempt of death and voluntary self-devotion which are so common among them; and then it was impressed on them by their original lawgiver that they are all brothers, from the moment that they are converted, and deny the gods of Greece, and worship the crucified sage, and live after his laws. –Lucian (2nd Century A.D.)
FULL DEVOTION & FULL DELIGHT:
· Authority: I find delight in SUBMITTING to what Jesus says.
· Identity: I find delight in DEFINING myself by what Jesus DID for me, not in what I DO.
· Activity: I find delight in DOING for others what Jesus has DONE for me.
BOTTOM LINE: Don’t live your life to PLEASE (use) others; live your life to LOVE others.
