A Deep Series

Oct 07, 2018 | Paul Robie

Who's the Boss? | A Deep Series Part 1 | Draper

THINK ABOUT IT: Everybody has an AUTHORITY. What’s yours?

John 3:3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

Jesus seems to be telling Nicodemus that he must recognize his own insufficiency, that he will have to turn his back on his autonomous, seemingly happy life, and be reborn as a human being who understands his dependency on something greater. That seems like a radical challenge to our freedom. – Mark Lilla (New York Times Article, Getting Religion)

NOTE: No one GLADLY submits to an authority that they know is NOT for them.

Romans 2:4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine! – Abraham Kuyper

Colossians 2:9-10 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.

QUESTION: What if freedom isn’t found in RESISTING authority but finding the RIGHT authority?

Colossians 3:1-4 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

OBSERVATION #1: In order to move from AUTONOMY to glad submission to Christ’s rule, I must measure His compassion by the CROSS and His power by the RESURRECTION. (v.1)

OBSERVATION #2: As we gladly submit to Christ’s authority we will see our VALUES and our THINKING change to honor Him. (vv.1-2)

REALITY CHECK: Ultimately, we’ll LOOK like what we LIVE for.

BOTTOM LINE: When you BELIEVE the Gospel, you BECOME like the Gospel.

If you serve your career, your career will never die for your sins. If you live for your career and fail, it will crucify you inside with self-loathing. But Jesus was crucified for you…Everyone lives for something…Christians answer that if we are living for the one who both created us and redeemed us, we are by definition taking on the liberating constraints. – Tim Keller (Making Sense of God)

THE FDFD QUESTION: Do I find delight in submitting to what GOD says?

GROUP DISCUSSION

1. As much as some of us may enjoy trying to be our own ultimate authority—every one of us is accountable to an authority. How do you tend to respond when you dislike or disagree with an authority?

2. Ask someone to read the quote below. Then ask, Why do you think some people might wince at that?

3. As a group, read Colossians 3: 1-17 together. What is the significance of every command coming after the very first statement, “Since you have been raised with Christ”?

4. How has what you treasure, or what you value changed as a result of following Jesus? What’s the most recent example? Where are you experiencing tension between what Jesus says and what you value? What is your next step?

5. How has your thinking changed a result of following Jesus? What’s the most recent example? Where are you experiencing tension between what Jesus says and how you think? What is your next step?

6. What is your response to this statement? I find delight in submitting to what Jesus says.

MEMORY VERSES

Pick one or try to memorize both.

Colossians 2:9-10 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.

Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
