A Deep Series

Nov 11, 2018 | Rick Henderson

Whatever . . . | A Deep Series Part 6 | Draper

Colossians 3:15-16

QUESTION: Which is more important: WHAT decisions you make or HOW you make decisions?

Good Outcome + Bad Process = LUCKY

Bad Outcome + Good Process = WISE

Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

PEACE: INNER personal harmony

PEACE: INTERPERSONAL harmony

Peace is a QUALITY in, not a COMPASS for believers.

Colossians 3:16-17 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.[17] And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

QUESTION: What does it mean to do something in the name of Jesus?

ANSWER: Happily align your activity with his COMMANDS and CHARACTER.

Most of God’s will is spelled out in black and white. It’s not hidden. There’s no cosmic Easter egg hunt required to see who can find it and who gets left with an empty basket. But, unfortunately, that’s how many of us feel. For some of us, no matter how hard we search, we keep coming back with an empty basket. –Larry Osborne

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Colossians 3:16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly…

God’s will is OBSCURE when you don’t know His Word, and it’s OBVIOUS when you do.

Love God and do whatever you please: for the soul trained in love to God will do nothing to offend the One who is Beloved. –Augustine

BOTTOM LINE: Love God and do as you PLEASE.

GROUP DISCUSSION

1. Everybody battles insecurity and stress to some degree. What are the kinds of decisions that enflame your insecurity or that stress you the most?

2. It would certainly be easier on us if God had a system to tell us exactly what to do every time we have to make a decision. But, why wouldn’t that be better for us?

3. Read Colossians 3:15-16 together. What relationships in your life could use more peace? What do you want to do about it?

4. Read Romans 12:2 and Colossians 3:16-17 together. Share some meaningful decisions that are coming up in the near future. What would it mean to make whatever decisions you are going to make, “in the name of Jesus?”

5. After all that we’ve discussed and heard together, what’s your response to the BOTTOM LINE: Love God and do as you please?

MEMORY VERSES | Pick one or try to memorize more than one.

Ephesians 5:15-17 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,[16] making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.[17] Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

Proverbs 4:6-7 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.[7] The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[38] This is the first and greatest commandment.[39] And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
