The Good Place
What Makes Heaven Better Than Now? | Part 3: The Good Place | Draper
Heaven is not an eternal CHURCH service in the sky.
God’s plan is not that we escape this earth but that He RESTORES it.
God loves his creation, ALL of it.
The point of Christianity is not…to go to heaven when you die. Rather it is putting the whole creation to rights. – N.T. Wright
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Isaiah 65:17 “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth.”
Acts 3:21 Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.
2 Peter 3:13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
Revelation 21:5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
God’s eternal remedy to suffering on earth is not heaven but the new HEAVEN and EARTH.
MERISM: the combination of two contrasting words to refer to an entirety
NOTE: Heaven and Earth = ALL things
God is making all things new not all new things. N.T. Wright
NEW: Already existing but renovated.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
God is restoring US first and He will restore the EARTH next.
Romans 8:18-25 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
New Heaven and New Earth doesn’t mean something BRAND new it means something MADE new.
When Jesus died, God wasn’t done with his old body. His resurrection body was his old body made new. God is not done with these bodies or this earth. Our old bodies will be made new, and this old earth will be made new. Randy Alcorn
Revelation 21:1-4 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
"We normally think of our going up to heaven to live with God in his place. That is indeed what happens when we die. But the ultimate promise is that God will come down to live with us in our place, on the new earth." – Randy Alcorn
BOTTOM LINE: Heaven will indeed be a PLACE on Earth.
"I am convinced that the typical view of heaven — eternity in a disembodied state — is not only completely contrary to the Bible but obscures the far richer truth: that God promises us eternal life as totally healthy, embodied people more capable of worship, friendship, love, discovery, work, and play than we have ever been." – Randy Alcorn
