Truth & Tradition | Mix & Match Part 3 | South Jordan
What do you do when uncomfortable truth challenges comfortable TRADITION?
Acts 11:1-18 The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him and said, “You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.”Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story…“As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?” When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”
Tradition is a strong TEMPTATION.
When tradition and truth get mixed, the Gospel gets MISSED and God gets DISMISSED.
Acts 15:19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.”
Truth is more COMFORTABLE than tradition – in time.
1 Peter 1:24 For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” (ref. Isaiah 40:8)
1 Peter 2:6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion,a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” (ref. Isaiah 28:16)
1 Peter 3:10-12 For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good;they must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” (ref. Psalm 34:12)
Every New Testament author MATCHES the Old and the New without MIXING the Old and the New.
