Let There Be Light

Dec 16, 2018 | Rick Henderson

Joy To The... | Let There Be Light Part 3 | Draper

TODAY’S QUESTION: In the Christmas story, who do you identify with most?

Matthew 2:1-3 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

Matthew 2:4-10 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

Jesus’ arrival will RIVAL our need for control.

Matthew 2:9-11 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

QUESTION: What’s the difference between those who WORSHIP and those who
RESIST at Christmas?

RESISTERS preserve, protect, and control.

WORSHIPPERS submit, give, and enjoy.

The people with the least control have the most JOY.

Matthew 2:16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi,
At some point, your need to control will HURT people.

John 16:20-22 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

BOTTOM LINE: Because He is in control, we don’t need to be; this leads to JOY.

Discussion Questions

1. Have you ever thought of yourself as controlling? Why or why not?

2. What is it about Herod’s story that surprised you? Why does he make the perfect rival to Jesus as King?

3. Read Matthew 2:1-20. What is it about the Magi that would point to them as FDFD?

4. What are two ways that we can …
a. Enhance our sense of AWE for Christ this Christmas season?
b. SUBMIT are lives in WORSHIP to Christ this Christmas season?
