Twisted Truth & Tainted Love - West Jordan

Series Thesis: The difference between the DEPENDABLE and the DESERTER isn’t their circumstances, it’s their COURAGE.

2 Timothy 3:1-9 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

Observation #1: We should EXPECT difficulty.

2 Timothy 3:1-3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love…

SMCC CORE VALUE: The measure of maturity is not how much we know, but how well we LOVE. (John 13:35 & 14:15)

    HOW LOVE IS TAINTED

    • ARROGANCE

2 Timothy 3:2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud…

For pride is spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense. -C.S. Lewis

There never can have been, and never can be, and there never shall be any sin without pride. -Saint Augustine

    • ABUSE

2 Timothy 3:2-3 People will be…abusive, disobedient to their parents…slanderous, without self-control, brutal

    • ABSENCE of virtue

2 Timothy 3:2-3 People will be…ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good

    HOW TRUTH IS TAINTED

Observation #2: WOLVES twist the truth on purpose.

2 Timothy 3:4-8 Treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—5 having a form of godliness but denying its power.

Observation #3: Love everyone, but refuse FRIENDSHIP to anyone who is a WOLF.

2 Timothy 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

Matthew 7:15 Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

QUESTION: How can we recognize wolves?

7 Traits of a False Teacher (Wolf)

    • Different Source – 2 Peter 1:16, Galatians 1:8
    • Different Message - 2 Peter 2:1
    • Different Position – 2 Peter 1:4, 2 Peter 2:19
    • Different Character – 2 Peter 2:10, 14
    • Different Appeal – 2 Peter 2:18
    • Different Fruit – 2 Peter 2:17
    • Different End – 2 Peter 2:1,3; Matthew 7:21

What’s DEEP in our hearts will eventually DRIP out of our mouths.

Luke 6:45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

2 Timothy 3:9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

KEY TRUTH: Constantly evaluate outside INFLUENCERS and inside IMPULSES.

    DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

    1. Have you ever expressed tainted love to someone you care about? What kind of damage do arrogance, abuse, and the absence of virtue (loving, forgiving, edifying, self-control, kindness, wanting the best for others) do to others?
    2. When was the last time someone tried to scam you? Tell us about it.
    3. Read 2 Timothy 3:1-9. Paul is having a tough conversation with Timothy, and instructing him on some difficult matters. In fact he’s encouraging Timothy to have very difficult conversation with people he knew well, and who were in his church! Who has these kinds of conversations with you?
    4. Review 2 Timothy 3:2-5. Which of these tainted loves pop up most frequently in you?
    5. Having a form of godliness but denying its power means looking good on the outside, while not being changed on the inside. How do you think a person becomes this way?
    6. How do you refuse to tolerate false teaching without being an intolerable person?
