Plotting Your Path Through Life - St. George

Proverbs 23:22-24 [the author speaking to his son] Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. 23 Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding. 24 The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him.

  • Wisdom: knowing what is the RIGHT THING to do.
  • Understanding: knowing HOW and WHY to do it.
  • Discipline: The ability to SCHEDULE the pain and pleasure of life so that one can do the right thing consistently.

KEY IDEA: “Plotting your path through life” requires that you evaluate all of life’s decisions based on the knowledge that those choices will always lead to real CONSEQUENCES – both good and bad.

Proverbs 7:6-27 (NIV) At the window of my house I looked out through the lattice. 7 I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who lacked judgment. 8 He was going down the street near her corner, walking along in the direction of her house 9 at twilight, as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in. 10 Then out came a woman to meet him, dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent. 11 (She is loud and defiant, her feet never stay at home; 12 now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks.) 13 She took hold of him and kissed him and with a brazen face she said: 14 "I have fellowship offerings at home; today I fulfilled my vows. 15 So I came out to meet you; I looked for you and have found you! 16 I have covered my bed with colored linens from Egypt. 17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. 18 Come, let's drink deep of love till morning; let's enjoy ourselves with love! 19 My husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey. 20 He took his purse filled with money and will not be home till full moon." 21 With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. 22 All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose 23 till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life. 24 Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say. 25 Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths. 26 Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng

Plotting Principle #1 = The Principle of SOWING AND REAPING.

Galatians 6:7-9 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

Plotting Principle #2: The Principle of the PATH: the path that you are traveling DETERMINES where you will arrive.

Proverbs 22:3 A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.

Plotting Principle #3: The Principle of proper PROPORTION: benefit vs. loss analysis.

  • Minimize the BENEFITS.
  • Maximize the CONSEQUENCES.

Plotting Principle #4: The Principle of “THE DAY” – all of us will one day stand before God to give an ACCOUNT of what we did with what He gave us.

Luke 19:17-23 "'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' 18 "The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.' 19 "His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.' 20 "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.' 22 "His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?'”

Personal Application

  • What decisions are you currently facing that require you to “plot with your future goals in mind”?
  • What are all the possible “destinations” for your decision – good and bad?
  • Who have you talked to about your “decisions”? Are they wise?
