How Awe Transforms Us - Draper

Problem for the Religious = They are blind to the AWE INSPIRED beauty and greatness of Christ by their desire to be blessed.

2 Corinthians 3:13-16 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. 14 But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

Problem for the Irreligious = They are blind to the AWE INSPIRED beauty and greatness of Christ by their infatuation with “self.”

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

The Gospel Cure For Both: Cultivate AWE = valuing Christ appropriately.

2 Corinthians 3:18 And we… all contemplate (reflect upon) the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Big Idea: Awe for God transforms us because what WOWS us WOOS us.

    Four Aspects of Awe

Aspect #1: We must THINK deeply about WHY God is glorious.

Psalm 63:1-8 O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water... 3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you…6 On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. 7 Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. 8 My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

    Aspect #2: Awe requires EXPRESSION.

Psalm 63:5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

Psalm 33:1-3 Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. 2 Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.

Aspect #3: Awe requires that we BEHOLD or CONTEMPLATE (appraise) God’s goodness and greatness.

Psalm 63:1-2 O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.

2 Corinthians 3:18 And we… all contemplate (reflect upon) the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Aspect #4: Ultimately, it is an experience of God’s GRACE, expressed to us through Jesus Christ, that inspires our deepest sense of AWE.

1 Timothy 1:15-17 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
