Guard The Gospel - St. George

2 Timothy 1:13-15 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you — guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. 15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

2 Timothy 2:1-13 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. 3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs — he wants to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God's word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

Big Idea: Paul was asking Timothy to GUARD the GOSPEL.

2 Timothy 1:14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you — guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Observation #1: The Gospel is the truth about US, about GOD, and about what God did for US.

Observation #2: The gospel was fully FORMULATED in Paul’s day and was to be kept as a PATTERN of sound teaching.

2 Timothy 1:13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.

Observation #3: The compelling event that fuels the Gospel is the RESURRECTION.

2 Timothy 2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal.

Question: Why do we need to guard the Gospel? What / who is the danger?

Answer #1: All RELIGIONS oppose the Gospel.

Answer #2: Because False religion leads people AWAY from Christ.

2 Timothy 1:15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

Answer #3: There is a GRAVITATIONAL pull toward religion… a desire to use GOD for our purposes.

Question: How do we guard the Gospel?

Answer: We equip as many people as possible to be RELIABLE witnesses of God’s grace = we all do our PART.

2 Timothy 2:1-2 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

Three examples of what reliable witnesses looks like.

Example #1: The SOLDIER = People who understand the importance of discipline, endurance, and following orders to a T.

2 Timothy 2:3-4 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs — he wants to please his commanding officer.

Example #2: The ATHLETE = People who are willing to TRAIN like an athlete and abide by the rules of the game.

2 Timothy 2:5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules.

Example #3: The FARMER = People who understand the importance of being a first partaker.

2 Timothy 2:6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.

The goal of guarding the Gospel: SALVATION of lost souls.

2 Timothy 2:10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What comes to your mind when you hear the word “gospel?” Why is it “good news” relationally, emotionally, as well as spiritually?
  2. Read 2 Timothy 1:13-2:13. In your opinion what is the greatest threat to the gospel today? Why?
  3. Have you ever had to stand up for the gospel and suffer because of it? What did that look like? (Read 1:15-16 and Hebrews 10:32-34)
  4. Are you a person of influence for the gospel? What are the qualifications of a “reliable person” of gospel influence (2:1-3)? Which analogy (soldier, athlete, farmer) used by Paul resonates with you most? Why?
  5. Review the Gospel as presented in this message. Read Ephesians 2:8-9 and discuss why it is replaced with “religion” so often.
