Guard The Gospel - South Jordan

2 Timothy 1:13-2:13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you — guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. 15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus. 2:1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. 3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs — he wants to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God's word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 11 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13 if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

Big Idea: Paul was asking Timothy to GUARD the GOSPEL with the help of those he has trained. (2 Timothy 1:11,14 ; 2:2)

Review: What is the Gospel?

Answer: The truth about us and about God and about what He did FOR US.

  • Man REBELLED (trust broken)
  • Man RESPONDS (trust granted)

Observation #1: The compelling event that fuels the Gospel is the RESURRECTION. (2 Timothy 2:8-9)

Observation #2: The Gospel = HEALTHY words, that lead us to a RIGHT relationship with God and each other. (2 Timothy 1:13)

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Question: Why do we need to guard the Gospel? What / who is the danger?

Answer #1: All RELIGIONS oppose the Gospel. (2 Timothy 2:15-16 ,Hebrews 32-34)

Answer #2: There is a GRAVITATIONAL pull toward religion… a desire to USE GOD for our purposes. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Question: How do we guard the Gospel?

Answer: We equip as many people as possible to be RELIABLE witnesses of God’s grace. (2 Timothy 2:1-3)

  • People who will act like soldiers and ENDURE hardship for the Gospel. (v.3-4)
  • People who are willing to TRAIN like an athlete. (2:5)
  • People who will work HARD like farmers and spread the seeds of the Gospel. (2:6)
  • People who CARE DEEPLY about others enjoying the same grace that they have received. (2:10)

  1. What comes to your mind when you hear the word “gospel?” Why is it “good news” relationally, emotionally, as well as spiritually?
  2. Read 2 Timothy 1:13-2:13. In your opinion what is the greatest threat to the gospel today? Why?
  3. Have you ever had to stand up for the gospel and suffer because of it? What did that look like? (Read 1:15-16 and Hebrews 10:32-34)
  4. Are you a person of influence for the gospel? What are the qualifications of a “reliable person” of gospel influence (2:1-3)? Which analogy (soldier, athlete, farmer) used by Paul resonates with you most? Why?
  5. Review the Gospel as presented in this message. Read Ephesians 2:8-9 and discuss why it is replaced with “religion” so often.
