Freak Out

Control Freak Series: Part Five

Pastor Kile Baker October 29th, 2017

THINK ABOUT IT: Is it possible to live without FAITH?

Genesis 15:5-6 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Genesis 16:1-2 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” Abram agreed to what Sarai said.

Sin is being fully persuaded that I have the power to do what GOD has promised.

Faith is being fully persuaded that GOD has the power to do what GOD has promised.

Romans 4:18-25 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

Forgiveness says, “you may GO.”

Justification says, “you may COME.”

GOSPEL TRUTH: Righteousness is something God puts in your ACCOUNT, not something you pay out of your account.

Romans 3:21-24 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

It is not the strength of your faith but the object of your faith that actually saves you. Strong faith in a weak branch is fatally inferior to weak faith in a strong branch. -Tim Keller

God, you know me, and I know me. There is nothing in me that makes me right before you. I can’t point to anything I’ve done so I point to everything Jesus Christ has done for me.  I can’t achieve righteousness so today I choose to receive it. Apply His righteousness to my account. Justify me, God, as you’ve promised, because of Jesus. Today, I choose to trust that you are who you say you are and you did what you said you would do. I step across the line from once trusting myself to now trusting you.”

Small Group Questions:

  • We kicked off this message with this question: Is it possible to live without faith? What’s your answer? Why?

  • What promises have been made to you over the course of your life? What promises are you trusting in right now?

  • Go back and read Genesis 15:1-6. What was the promise that God made to Abraham? Why do you think the story of Abraham’s faith is so important to the New Testament writers?

  • How would you explain the difference between forgiveness and justification to a friend?

  • Read the quote from Tim Keller above. What is your immediate response?

  • If I know God’s declares me righteous in Christ, how will it change the way I live?
