BLINDSIDED

Control Freak: Part Three

Pastor Eric Nelson           October 8, 2017

SERIES THESIS:  Faith isn’t a CHURCH issue—it’s a CONTROL issue.

Big Question:  Do you know why you trust what you trust?

Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence.  Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.  –Richard Dawkins

BIBLICAL FAITH:  active reliance on what we know to be true.

Matthew 22:36-37 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”[37] Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your MIND.’

It’s unreasonable to believe anything without good REASONS.

John 20:25  So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

  • Ignoring questions is not faith; that’s FEAR.
  • Ignoring evidence is not faith; that’s FOOLISH.

John 20:26-28  A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”[27] Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.

Faith is not in competition with reason; it’s the consequence of REASON—trusting what is true.

John 20:28  Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Gospel Truth:  There are no LEAPS of faith, only STEPS of faith.

John 20:29-31  [29] Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”[30] Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.[31] But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

John 17:20-21  “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, [21]  that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Acts 1:3  After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

I suggest you completely ban the phrase “leap of faith” from your vocabulary.  Biblical faith is based on knowledge, not wishing or blind leaps.  Knowledge builds confidence and confidence leads to trust.  The kind of faith God is interested in is not wishing.  It’s trust based on knowing, sure confidence grounded in evidence.  –Greg Koukl

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1.  Has there ever been a time in your life where you were afraid to ask a big question? Has there ever been a time where you felt tempted to just ignore the evidence out there?
  2.  Jesus gave evidence and expected people to decide. Faith doesn’t allow us to stay passive.  Are there any areas in your life where you are passive in your faith? Give some examples?
  3.  In the message we heard:  Ignoring questions is not faith; that’s fear.  And, ignoring evidence is not faith; that’s foolish.  What are some consequences of a blind faith mentality?
  4.  Read John 20:26-31 and Acts 1:3.  What does it communicate about Jesus that he was happy to provide many convincing proofs?
  5.  How do we trust in what we know is true when life feels out of control?
  6.  What is your next step?
