A New Story - Draper

Ephesians 5:15–17 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

BIG QUESTION: How do I understand what God’s will is for my ordinary job?

Mark 10:17–20 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’” 20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

Every Story Is About:

(a) what human life in the world should be like

(b) what has knocked it off balance

(c) what can be done to make it right

Mark 10:21-26 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

Irreligious & Religious Identity: Activity & Accumulation => Value =>Identity

WHAT you do and WHAT you have determines your VALUE and WHO you are.

Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

The Gospel Story:

a. God created the world perfectly

b. Humanity destroyed the perfect creation with our sin

c. Jesus is restoring all of creation

Gospel Identity: Identity => Value => Activities & Accumulation

WHO you are determines your VALUE and informs WHAT you do with WHAT have.

How do we work in light of the Gospel Story?

Examine: We examine the story we tell ourselves.

Expose: We expose the idols we have and long for.

Engage: We demonstrate God’s new story of redemption & service.

Mark 12:28b–33 “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” 29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” 32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

GOSPEL SOLUTION: Vocation is more about WHY you work and HOW you work rather than WHAT you do for work.
