My Church | Investing in the Story

May 06, 2018 | Rick Henderson

A New Community | My Church Part 2 | Draper

Series Thesis: The greatest movement in human history is the LOCAL church.

John 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Big Idea #1: Jesus envisioned the church as a new MOVEMENT fueled by its love for each other and for the outsider.

Big Idea #2: The Jesus model for community is far less COMPLICATED than the old religious system but far more DEMANDING.

Five Concepts that Define Christian Community

1) The church is more like a BODY than a KINGDOM.

1 Corinthians 12:12,26-27 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

2) Authority is to be exercised in the church for the benefit of the LED, not the LEADERS.

Matthew 20:25-26 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—”

3) In the church women are to be VALUED and PROTECTED.

Matthew 19:10 The disciples said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.”(NASB)

4) In a healthy church, spirituality is defined by how well one LOVES God and others.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is insight, knowledge, understanding of the deeper things of faith, and the ability to make people hang on your every word.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

5) In the Jesus Movement: Holiness is about being A PART OF rather than setting one’s self APART FROM.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

Bottom Line: A healthy Church CORPORATION makes possible a healthy Church COMMUNITY which makes possible a successful Church CAUSE.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Talk about a time when someone made a sacrifice on your behalf. How did that sacrifice make a difference in your life?

2. Why is Jesus’ concept of the church far simpler yet far more demanding than
what most people think?

3. Talk about some of the implications surrounding the idea that the church is a BODY not a KINGDOM. How does that affect the way you engage at SMCC? (Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-27)

4. In what area of your life—the way you use authority, behave in your marriage, or view holiness—fail to reflect the kind of Christian community that Christ envisioned for us? What are some things love requires of you in that area of your life? (Read Galatians 5:18-23; Ephesians 5:21-25; Matthew 20:25-26)

5. Read John 13:1–17. What do you think this example set by Jesus means for your life? What are some ways you need to wash more feet?

6. During the message, you were encouraged to engage with “outsiders.” What is one thing you can do this week to actively love that person or group of people? How can your Small Group support you?
